Serving as Lead Brand Strategist & Senior Web Designer, I worked with founders Chris & Bea Lopez in developing Venice Community Cleanups branding and visual identity system. Through many in-person meetings, community cleanups, and feedback loops about how VCC is verbally understood, we were able to successfully develop VCC's visual identity system, brand mission, vision, and other important components to this nonprofit. After working on the brand strategy and a healthy foundation for the nonprofit, I started working on re-designing their website. I developed the website originally in Wordpress, but then took my ideas and fleshed them out in Figma. I created S.W.O.T. analyses to help me understand other nonprofits that are popular within L.A. County and San Diego County.
I put together an 8-page assessment of what's working, what's not working, as well as what we could implement into the website. This includes my notes on the confusing information architecture and legibility. When observing the website, it's bare. There was nothing there that made me believe this was a true nonprofit, or was ready for public viewing. After a meeting with one of the 2 founders, Chris, he not only agreed with my analyses, but also pointed out that the other nonprofits I had researched and incorporated into my S.W.O.T. analyses saw US as their competitors. In his words, "Yeah this should be about protecting our oceans, not about who can make more money off of and lord expertise over volunteers. That doesn't make sense."
