Challenge
The event aimed to empower and uplift the residents of Southwest Baltimore by fostering inclusivity and unity. Organizers wanted a visual narrative that reflected the community’s transformation, inspired by Chijioke’s poem on historical segregation and Elder Carl Pierce, Sr.’s vision for anticipatory socialization—a springboard to self-determination.
Approach
As the lead visual designer, I developed a design language and motion graphics rooted in inclusivity and unity. Collaborating with the organizers, I visually represented anticipatory socialization through art direction inspired by Chijioke’s poem. The visuals were designed to ease transitions into future roles, aligning with the event’s mission to empower returning citizens, Department of Juvenile Services representatives, and NAACP leaders.
Outcome
The event visuals successfully embodied the community’s aspirations for growth and empowerment. Panel discussions reinforced the narrative of transformation, fostering meaningful dialogue among attendees. Feedback highlighted how the design elevated the event’s impact, creating a sense of unity and hope for Southwest Baltimore.
