The Road Not Taken symposium was designed to uplift the residents of Southwest Baltimore by fostering true inclusivity and unity. Organizers needed a compelling visual narrative reflecting the profound transformation of the community. As the lead visual designer, I drew deep inspiration from Chijioke's poetry on historical segregation and Elder Carl Pierce, Sr.'s vision of anticipatory socialization. This sociological concept serves as a powerful mental and emotional springboard for personal growth.
To bring this vision to life, I developed a comprehensive design language and dynamic motion graphics rooted in pure empathy. The art direction visually represented the process of anticipatory socialization, intentionally designed to ease transitions into future roles for returning citizens, Department of Juvenile Services representatives, and NAACP leaders. The final visuals successfully embodied the highest aspirations of the community. Organizers and attendees confirmed the design elevated the entire event, fostering meaningful dialogue and creating a lasting sense of hope and clarity for Southwest Baltimore.
